Susan Wilson, LPC
One of the things I love the most about being a therapist is being able to see the visible transformation in my clients who move from feeling fearful, worried, self-critical or anxious to being able to feel how loveable, adequate, powerful and capable they really are. Facilitating a therapeutic environment that allows a client to have a greater understanding of themselves, their reactions to life events and to gain control in their own life is the foundation of my work.
My education and experience are diverse, yet focused. My entire professional life has been devoted to working with families, couples, and individuals. For the last 18 years, I have been professionally committed to helping people create lasting change in their lives while working in community mental health and in private practice settings. Much of my work has been with individuals who have experienced trauma in their life. Often the trauma stems from a series of events creating more complex trauma.
My work has involved working with individuals who are experiencing anxiety and depression as well as relational issues. I am certified in Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) and find it especially useful to some clients who are “stuck” as a result of traumatic experiences. I additionally draw from training in attachment and family systems theory, play therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, psychodynamic approaches and utilize mindfulness practices.
I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in the Commonwealth of Virginia and Certified Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapist.
