Amy Spangler-Dunning, LPC, Mdiv (Masters of Divinity)

Greetings. My name is Amy Spangler-Dunning, LPC, Mdiv (Masters of Divinity). I have recently returned to my home state of VA, and am happy to be providing mental health care here in Lynchburg at Counseling Connections. Prior to this, I lived in Des Moines, IA where I obtained my Master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling (2012) at Drake University. From there, I practiced full time at the Des Moines Pastoral Counseling Center, a mind, body, spirit focused non-profit center.

My approach to therapy is rooted in a belief in the inherent worth and dignity of all people and that, though we struggle in different ways, we each have within us the capacity for healing. It’s just that, sometimes, we need someone to walk alongside us to get us there.

Areas of focus for me are: early childhood trauma, depression, anxiety, and LGBTQ affirmative therapy. I also find great meaning in helping people navigate the complex emotions of life transitions and existential concerns. I am trained in the Gottman method of Couple’s therapy and work with couples struggling to experience the positive aspects of committed life together. Additional trainings include, EMDR Level 1 & 2 (working toward certification), Janina Fisher’s model for working with trauma (Levels 1,2,3), and have some experience in Internal Family Systems and Pat Ogden’s body based trauma model.

One additional note is that prior to my Master’s in Counseling I received a Masters of Divinity degree from Lexington Theological Seminary (1995), and served as Pastor in churches in Kentucky and Iowa (Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). While I do not impose my beliefs on clients, I enjoy working with Clergy, with people from all or no faith traditions, and I find meaning in helping individuals struggling with theological and spiritual concerns (however one defines “spiritual”). I understand faith traditions of all kinds to have the potential both for hurt and for healing.

When I am not doing therapy, I am practicing Yoga, walking, and enjoying my husband, son, and two funny, sweet, and very energetic dogs. Oh, and then there is the beach – any beach, but mostly Woods Cove in California.
